What
is an MES?
“A Manufacturing Execution
System (MES) is a dynamic
information system that drives
effective execution of manufacturing operations.
Using current
and accurate data, MES guides,
triggers, and reports on plant activities as events occur.
The MES set of functions manages
production operations from point of order release into manufacturing
to point of product
delivery into finished goods.
MES software provides mission critical
information about production
activities to others across the organization and supply chain
via bi-directional communication.”

What
does it really mean?
MES – Manufacturing
Execution Systems can mean many different things to many
different people.
At Paper-Less, MES embodies our vision.
Manufacturing -
Our focus is Manufacturing. It is all
we do. 100% of Paper-Less’ customers are manufacturers,
and discrete manufacturers at that. The more complex you
look, the better we look.
Execution – Execution
is what it’s
all about. ERP says what is planned, Execution says what
happens.
Systems – Systems are
needed to help bridge the gap between that which is planned,
and that which is happening
out on the floor.
Paper-Less’ core MES products are designed to handle:
- time and attendance
- labor
reporting
- production reporting
- quality
reporting
- non-conformance
- corrective action
- kanban management
- takt rate boards
- heijunka scheduling
- supplier
performance
- inventory management tools....
The
label itself – MES – suggests
a system. A system is a series of integrated parts working
together
to achieve a goal. Our goal is to do just that, offer an
integrated system to help you manage your production operation
to enable achievement of your goals.
It has taken us years to learn but ERP planning systems
alone can leave a pretty big void in a closed loop information
system. As we have learned to implement pull systems in our
manufacturing execution processes, why do we continue to
accept push systems with our ERP systems taking guesses at
what might happen on the shop floor?
MES – Manufacturing Execution Systems
is what it’s
all about. Without an MES toolset, your
educated guess is the best way to fill the void in the information
flow. Or
you could wait until tomorrow when the information is collected,
keyed into the ERP system, validated, and posted. Then you
would know what was going on – yesterday.
MES software
provides a means to fill the void and bridge the gap. Providing
real-time data collection tools. Paper-Less offers
a state-of-the-art MES tool with a current
design concept that supports a mixed mode manufacturer who
has a blend of
traditional and Lean based manufacturing principles.
Vision:
Our vision forms our value statement:
" Paper-Less intends to deliver a single system to
converge historically divergent, disparate systems to offer
a common user interface, feeding a common database, with
common information from the production floor".
This integration enables unprecedented capabilities as our
manufacturing customers take strides toward employing Lean
principles in a traditional order based production environments.
Computers on the shop floor enable two way communications
to minimize or even eliminate the dependency on the shop
packet. Prioritized work order lists, work instructions,
engineering drawings, order holds, messaging, and many other
similar features empower the production worker at the work
center where the information is most needed.
Real-time reporting means real-time access to accurate data.
Touch screen interfaces ease the learning curve and day to
day use of the system. Downstream, manually intensive batch
processes are eliminated in favor of point of origin data
collection.
MES is
considered a “core” application at Paper-Less.
MES is one of the few remaining transaction support systems
left to be installed by a surprising majority of customers.
When we think of return on investment, MES pays fast and
significant dividends.
